Carol Steinberg appointed to Roedean School’s anti-discrimination committee

1 December 2020

Carol Steinberg has been appointed as member of an expert interim committee established at Roedean School to tackle incidents and complaints of discrimination.

The prestigious girls’ school in Johannesburg made headlines in October 2020 after an incident of racist bullying of one junior school pupil by a classmate. This is not, however, the first time in recent years that the school has been in the hot seat after instances of racism and discrimination came to light.

In 2019 principal Murray Thomas was suspended pending an investigation into his handling of a handful of cases. He was succeeded by Fiona Rogers in March 2019, who was promoted from deputy to executive head, a position she currently retains.

There has been increasing focus on racism and discrimination at girls’ schools throughout the country – especially in the wake of the Black Lives Matter protests in the US and around the world – with present and former pupils speaking up on social media and advocating for more inclusive and diverse school environments.

The expert committee, including Adv Steinberg, are tasked with dealing with complaints of discrimination.

Steinberg holds BA (DA), MA and LLB qualifications and was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in 2006. She includes constitutional law among her preferred areas of practices, and this, along with her extensive public law experience and commitment to the ideals of transformation and non-racism, will make her an asset to the committee.
