Phillip MokoenaSenior Counsel

Biography:

Phillip Mokoena (Chairman) was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in July 1997 and took silk in September 2011. His preferred areas of practice include commercial litigation, arbitrations, labour, administrative and construction law. Philip has appeared in the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Constitutional Court, Labour Court, Labour Appeal Court, CCMA, Education Labour Relations Council, South African Local Government Bargaining Council, General Public Service Sectoral Bargaining Council, International Chamber of Commerce in Zurich, Switzerland, Competition Tribunal and Competition Appeals Court.

Philip has acted as an arbitrator, as a chairperson in various disciplinary enquiries and as judge in the Labour Court and the South Gauteng High Court. He holds a B. Juris and LLB and is currently completing his LLM. Phillip is a member of the Johannesburg Bar Council.

Bogoshi BokabaSenior Counsel

Biography:

Bogoshi Bokaba (Deputy Chairman) was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in December 1994 and took silk in January 2008. His preferred areas of practice include commercial, corporate, tax and administrative law. He appears primarily before the High Courts, the Supreme Court of Appeal, arbitrations and the High and Supreme Courts of Namibia. In addition to his practice he has been appointed as an acting judge and as an arbitrator. Bogoshi holds an LLB and Higher Diplomas in corporate and tax law.

Susannah CowenSenior Counsel

Biography:

Susannah Cowen has been practising as an advocate since 2001. She started practising in Cape Town and, in 2010, moved to Johannesburg. She took silk in July 2018.
Her preferred areas of practice are commercial law, constitutional law, administrative law, land law and customary law. She has appeared in the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the High Court (various divisions), the Land Claims Court and regulatory tribunals. She has acted as a Judge in the High Court in Johannesburg.

Susannah holds BA and LLB degrees from the University of Cape Town and a BCL degree from the University of Oxford. In 2000 she clerked at the Constitutional Court for then President of that Court, Justice Arthur Chaskalson.

Biography:

Leah Gcabashe holds BA, BA (law), LLB, and LLM degrees as well as an honorary MA degree, she was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in 1997. Her practice is of a general nature. She appears primarily in the High Courts and has sat as an acting judge in the past.

Anthony GotzSenior Counsel

Biography:

Anthony Gotz was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in July 2001. Prior to joining the Johannesburg Bar, Anthony was a clerk to Justice Didcott as well as to Justice Chaskalson at the Constitutional Court. He also completed articles and was an admitted attorney at Webber Wentzel Bowens. His principal areas of practice are competition, administrative, media and general commercial law. Anthony has appeared in various divisions of the High Court, the Supreme Court of Appeal, the Competition Appeal Court and the Competition Tribunal. Petrus (Piet) LouwSenior Counsel

Biography:

Piet Louw holds B.Iur and LLB degrees and was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in 1988. He took silk in 2002. He is a general practitioner, but his preferred areas of practice include general commercial and regulatory work. He has appeared in all the South African superior courts and many of the regulatory tribunals. He has served as acting judge and has frequently participated in arbitrations, both as counsel and as arbitrator. He is a member of the management committee of the Arbitration Foundation of Southern Africa and he is the present chair of the Johannesburg Bar Council.

Vincent MalekaSenior Counsel

Biography:

Vincent Maleka, Founding Chairman of Thulamela Chambers, holds the B Proc LLB degrees. He was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in July 1989 and took silk in May 2002. His preferred areas of practice are constitutional and administrative law and litigation, pension fund and telecoms regulatory litigation and arbitrations. Vincent has appeared in various high and appeal courts, the Supreme Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court. He acts as chair of the Disciplinary Committee of the Independent Regulatory Board of Auditors (IRBA) and regularly appears in the Namibian High and Supreme Courts.

Gilbert MarcusSenior Counsel

Biography:

Gilbert Marcus was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in July 1983 and took silk in 1996. His preferred areas of practice include constitutional and administrative, public regulation, competition, media and telecommunications, as well as human rights law. Gilbert has appeared in the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court of Appeal and has acted as judge at the High Court and Labour Court. He has also been admitted to the bar in Lesotho, Swaziland, England and Wales (as non-practising solicitor) and is an associate tenant at Doughty Street Chambers in London.

Gilbert is an Honorary Professor of law at the University of the Witwatersrand and has written numerous articles on a wide range of subjects. He holds BA LLB and LLM qualifications.

Thandi NormanSenior Counsel

Biography:

Thandi Norman holds a B Iuris LLB degree and a Certificate in Shipping. She was admitted as an advocate to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in June 1992, and was further admitted to the Bisho Bar in January 1997. Thandi took silk in June 2011. Hasina CassimJunior Counsel

Biography:

After completing her BPharm degree in 1990, Hasina spent several years in the South African healthcare sector including the private hospital, home care, pharmaceutical and managed healthcare sectors. During her tenure in the healthcare sector, Hasina pursued studies in pharmaco-economics and general management. Whilst with Discovery, Hasina had the opportunity to complete an Executive Leadership Programme at the Said Business School, Oxford University. Thanyani (Kenny) ManyageJunior Counsel

Biography:

Thanyani Manyage (Kenny) holds a B Iuris LLB qualification and was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in November 2005. Prior to becoming an advocate, he was a prosecutor (1993 to 1999) and a magistrate (1999 to 2005). In addition to his background in criminal law, Kenny also practices more generally in commercial, administrative and labour law. Biography:

Mluleki Marongo was admitted to the Johannesburg Bar in December 2019.

Rudolf MastenbroekJunior Counsel

Biography:

Rudolf Mastenbroek was admitted to the Johannesburg Society of Advocates in December 2013. He holds a BA LLB (Stellenbosch), a Masters degree in Public Management (Wits) and a H Dip Tax (Rhodes.)

Prior to joining the Bar, he worked for the ANC Head Office, specifically focussing on the local government chapter of the Constitution during the Constitutional Assembly negotiations. Lesego RayiJunior Counsel

Biography:

Lesego holds an LL.B, obtained in 2006, from the University of the Witwatersrand, an LL.M (Mercantile Law) from the University of Pretoria and is an Advocate of the High Court of South Africa. She also holds a Post Graduate certificate in Banking and Finance Law, also obtained from the University of the Witwatersrand. Lesego has an impressive track record and acclaimed experience with great respect within the legal fraternity. She started her career at the Legal Aid Board in 2007 where she served her articles as a candidate attorney, defending accused person’s criminal matters.
She went on to join the National Energy Regulator of South Africa as a Legal Advisor in 2009. This was critical for the Regulator as ways and means were being established to expand the national power grid and rid Eskom of its woes in terms of both its economic tariffs and expansion and building of Koeburg and Medupi plant respectively. Lesego saw the dawn of Eskom’s Multi Year Price Determination (MYPD), Transnet’s Multi Product Pipeline (MPP) and the implementation of the Regulatory Agreement between the Government of South Africa and Sasol which differentiated between brown field and green field customers and regulated the setting of gas prices.

Stuart WilsonJunior Counsel

Biography:

Stuart was admitted to the bar in 2009. He has an MA from the University of Oxford. He also has an LLB (with distinction) and a PhD in Law from the University of the Witwatersrand. Stuart’s practice focusses on constitutional and administrative law, but he also has experience in property law, criminal defence, and labour law. Stuart has made several leading appearances in the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Stuart is a visiting senior fellow at the University of the Witwatersrand Law School, and sits on the board of directors of the Socio-Economic Rights Institute of South Africa.

Gordon AberDoor Member

Biography:

Gordon, currently a tenant of 12 King’s Bench Walk in London, commenced practice at the Johannesburg Bar in the late 1980s. He established a busy commercial practice before being called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1996. He specialises in aviation and aviation insurance disputes, which frequently involve complex multi-jurisdictional claims. He is instructed on behalf of a wide range of commercial aviation interests, including airlines, airport owners, charter operators, ground handling companies, aircraft maintenance organisations (and their insurers) in a range of claims.

Gordon has a large aviation, aviation insurance and general commercial practice and he is regularly instructed by leading city law firms to appear in High Court litigation and ADR proceedings. He also advises and appears for the London war risks market and he has been involved in private arbitration proceedings in respect of losses in Libya, Chad and Afghanistan.

Gordon has argued some of the leading aviation insurance cases in the South African High Court and the South African Supreme Court of Appeal and he regularly appears in High Courts in neighbouring countries. Acting for these clients, and their insurers, in ADR proceedings is a growing area of his practice as arbitration and mediation proceedings become increasingly popular.

Biography:

Jason Brickhill holds an LLB from the University of Cape Town (magna cum laude) and an MSt in International Human Rights Law from the University of Oxford (with distinction). He was admitted to the Johannesburg Bar in 2010. His preferred areas of practice include constitutional, administrative and labour law. He appears in all South African courts and has appeared in the Namibian courts and in various commissions of inquiry, arbitrations and disciplinary proceedings. Jason served as a law clerk to Justice O’Regan at the Constitutional Court. He began practice at Bowman Gilfillan Attorneys before joining the Legal Resources Centre, where he was Director of the Constitutional Litigation Unit. Victoria BronsteinDoor Member

Biography:

Victoria Bronstein has a BA (hons) LLB, Certificate in Economics from the University of the Witwatersrand. She was a recipient of the Helen Suzman Leadership/Chevening Award to study in England and she has an LLM from University College London. She was a clerk of Justice Ackermann at the Constitutional Court of South Africa. She has an associate Professorship at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. She has written extensively in the area of provincial powers and specialises in federalism issues at all three levels of government. She has published in the area of Freedom of Expression. She is also a Commissioner of the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa.
She has expertise in administrative law, structures of government, human rights law, property law and international trade law. She became a door member of Thulamela in July 2016.

Tanya GoldenDoor Member

Biography:

Tanya Golden SC is a member of the Cape and Johannesburg Bars. She has a specialist practice in labour and administrative law. In the area of labour law, Golden SC conducts litigation in the Labour Court and Labour Appeal Court, represents clients in arbitrations and disciplinary hearings and is often appointed as the presiding officer in complex internal disciplinary hearings involving senior employees. She is a member of the Financial Services Board Enforcement Tribunal , is an AFSA commercial and labour law arbitrator and has acted as a judge in both the Labour Court and High Court. Golden SC also works in the areas of commercial law, local government law, and has done some work in oil and gas. She has held leadership positions in the profession and was chairperson of the Cape Bar in 2016/2017.

Biography:

Max Du Plessis was admitted to the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Advocates in 2000. His preferred areas of practice are constitutional, administrative, international, competition (with a particular focus on regulatory law) and human rights law. Max is a senior research associate at the Institute for Security Studies in the programme on International Crime in Africa.
